Post Graduate Department of Economics as part of Field Marshal K M Cariappa College Came into existence in the year 2014. Over the year the department has developed both in strength and quality. The prevailing M.A course has a curriculum which offers basic grounding in many fundamental branches of Economics like Economic Growth and Development, Research Methodology, Quantitative technique for Economics, Econometrics, Agriculture Economics, Infrastructure Economics, Managerial Economics, Indian Economics, Field Project. On the basis of the present needs the existing syllabus is revised in regular interval by the panel of Experts.
Though college is situated in hilly region, Department is equipped with necessary infrastructure, providing opportunities to the students. Evident to this, student of the department are securing 100% result and have cleared UGC JRF/NET, SLET examinations. Further, some are placed as PC, in Private sector Bank, MNC and some enrolled in other degree like B.Ed. Law.
University has given recognition to Dr. T D Thimmaiah & Dr. Thippeswamy E as research guides since 2016. At present 16 Students are studying in the department and 12 candidates are pursuing Ph.D. which includes 1 foreign candidate. 1 Major ICSSR and 3 UGC Minor Research Project has been completed by the department faculty members. All the staff members are rendering their valuable service both in teaching and research to bring name and fame to the department. Added to this senior faculty member of the department Dr. Thippeswamy E has been elevated to the post of Professor in March 2023. The members of the department have whole hearted and devoted involvement in all activities of the Department.
Mission
The study of Economics as a discipline encourages analytical thinking and a pragmatic approach to Economic problem. In addition to providing a strong foundation in Economic theory, the focus is on issues specific to the Indian context. The process of rational decision making taught in Economics is of great value irrespective of the career a person chooses.
Aim
The ultimate goal of the department is to promote excellence in teaching and research on par with other reputed Universities in India.

Jasmine P B (2018-2020) cleared UGC JRF –NET result dated 15-11-2022 currently pursuing Ph.D. at Department of Economics and Cooperation, University of Mysore.
Rashmitha U (2019-2021) received cash prize for securing Highest Marks in Macro Economics Analysis I and II semester for University at convocation held in April 2022.
Jasmine P B received cash prize for securing Highest Marks in Macro Economics Analysis I and II semester II for University at convocation held on 10/4 2021.
Departmental Activities
56th A D Shroff Memorial Inter College Elocution Competition was hosted by the Department of Economics (UG & PG). M R Pai Foundation and Forum for Free Entrepreneur sponsors with cash prize worth Rs 5000 every year. This was held on 1st December 2022.This competition was for UG students of the district. Programme was presided over by Dr Jagat Thimmaiah Mr Ananth shayana editor of Shakti Newspaper was the chief guest, Dr Kanika Assistant Professor Department of commerce, Government Women’s College Madikeri, Dr Rohit Lecturer P G Department of Physics and Yuga devaiah TV9 Kodagu Reporter judge the competition.
