The Department of English came into existence with the college itself in 1949.English was taught as a compulsory minor subject for many years. In 1995, EnglishLiterature was introduced as an optional subject. English literature is offered as one of theoptional subjects for BA students in two different combinations with Sociology and PoliticalScience/Journalism. In the academic year 2007-08, Career-oriented add-on course inFunctional English was introduced. It is taught at three levels - certificate, diploma and advanced diploma. Practical classes are conducted in the Digital English Language Lab,which was established in February 2008.
English language is taught at the degree level for the first four semesters (except BBAand BCA, where, it is taught during first two semesters) under the title “General Proficiencyand Communicative English”. Prose, poetry, novel, drama and essential topics in grammar and composition are prescribed in the syllabus to facilitate language learning. EnglishLiterature is taught in eight different papers spread over three years. The syllabus covers poetry, prose, drama, novel, history of English literature and critical concepts from the age ofShakespeare to 20th century including American and Indian Literatures.
The methodology of teaching includes giving lecture, holding question answer sessions, reading passages from the text, organising class seminars, using ICT tools etc. Programmes like special talks and workshops are conducted under the banner of JoyceEnglish Literary Association to expose the students to different facets of language and literature. The wall magazine “Touchstone” is brought out and competitions are organised periodically.The department has one Associate professor and two Assistant Professors, who arepursuing PhD. Two guest lecturers were appointed to cope with the remaining workload. Thefaculty take part in academic activities like orientation programmes, refresher courses,workshops, seminars, conferences etc., from time to time. They also have presented papersand published research papers in journals and books.
